By the way, if you can see Asian characters (some might only get boxes), you can get an idea of their meaning by using Babelfish (find the link from the Oceangram blog under the "translation tools" section).

To decide what language the characters are,
here's a rule of thumb:

1. If you see more curvy characters like this
"これは日本語である", the language is Japanese. (See the loops on the bottom of some of the characters?)

2. There are two kinds of Chinese, simplified and traditional. Most Chinese characters you find here are simplified (from China).

So put in the characters on Babelfish and choose "Chinese-simp" on the drop-down menu and see what you get. If there are characters not translated, try "Chinese-trad" and see what happens.

You should be able to get an IDEA of what they are saying (machine translation is notoriously bad, but it's better than nothing). : )

Timmy has arrived in Raleigh, NC. Home of the 2006 Stanley Cup Champs, the Carolina Hurricanes! We are the capital city, so you know the city is overrun with government types of folks. So it's pretty windy here! LOL We just had our state fair and the attendence was in the top 5 of all years. We are close to both the coast and the mountains, so whatever your vacation preference is, you are only 2-2.5 hours away from paradise. I hope you like the heat Timmy, here in Brisbane, Australia it's usually hot, not much rain though (sorry) but lots of ocean. You can swim with dolphins, stingrays, turtles and many breeds of fish, also there are octopus, some dangerous so beware, and on land many spiders some dangerous but also many beautiful creatures like koala, kangaroos, kookaburras, galahs, parrots and lots of lizards... have fun!!

I had just gone through a divorce and was feeling like a failure. On that Thanksgiving my 21 year old son wrote a letter and read it to me in front of all of my dinner guests. He said how thankful he was for me and all the support I had given him over the years. How he felt he could never repay for the life lessons I had taught him.

playing hide and seek in the garden with my grandpa when i was little. he hid behind the rose bushes and cos i was so small i couldn't see him. i cried and cried cos i thought he'd left me but then he ran out and scooped me up in his arms and said he'd never leave me. he died in march 2006. love you grandpa bill. -x-x-x-

my grandma died 10 years ago. I was lucky to have a grandma for 33 years of my life. We would sit and talk and talk and talk. If I wasn't nuts and I was 40 and single and had the burning urge to take a squirmy, crying thing and love it and help it turn into a decent human being, I'd absolutely consider having a kid or adopting on my own. Raising a kid alone is harder, but by the time you're 40 you're probably in a position to make it a lot easier.

Any airforce/army brats out there? In the US, that's what we call kids who's parents were in the military. Our family lived in the Philippines as a kid (one of many places).

While both of the boxed messages are Japanese language, I could not get a good translation on the original sender's message. The next box message translates with lovely thoughts of living with balance and love in our lives which will make us strong. I implore all of you oceangram lovers to go to a free translation site (do a google) and try your hand at copying and pasting the boxes to the translator. I think UK is a country, not a person.....United Kingdom? My Grandfather was from Germany, but he was born in Russia while his parents were on vacation. Late 1870"s, so he had dual citizenship until age 21, and later migrated to America and became an American citizen.
