By the way, if you can see Asian characters (some might only get boxes), you can get an idea of their meaning by using Babelfish (find the link from the Oceangram blog under the "translation tools" section).
To decide what language the characters are,
here's a rule of thumb:
1. If you see more curvy characters like this
"これは日本語である", the language is Japanese. (See the loops on the bottom of some of the characters?)
2. There are two kinds of Chinese, simplified and traditional. Most Chinese characters you find here are simplified (from China).
"这是汉语"
So put in the characters on Babelfish and choose "Chinese-simp" on the drop-down menu and see what you get. If there are characters not translated, try "Chinese-trad" and see what happens.
You should be able to get an IDEA of what they are saying (machine translation is notoriously bad, but it's better than nothing). : )
